Long time all of us understood only the electric lamp of incandescence as the bulb. Long and truly it served the person until it was succeeded by more economical fluorescent lamp. With development of technologies it gradually evolved in the energy saving bulb. But already LED bulbs begin to force out it gradually.

I think, presently there will be a little such people who can be surprised with the small burning bulb which is built in different modern electrical equipment. This bulb is called the semiconductor LED. The essence of its work is very simple. There are two materials having a little different properties of internal conductivity (because of impurity inside), one of which is called the zone "n", and the second - the zone "p".

The first has surplus of electrons, and the second their shortcoming. But the most interesting occurs not in them, and between them. Electrons under certain conditions, namely upon transition of the electron from higher energy level on lower (process of the recombination of electrons and holes), in our semiconductor make emission of excess energy in the form of the light beam (more precisely, emission of photons — light particles). As a result it turns out that under the influence of electric current there is the continuous recombination of particles in the LED and as a result light flow forms.

Quality characteristic of any element and the device is its efficiency (E). In the case with light sources of efficiency will depend on that how many percent from the general spent electric power went for transformation to the public, and how many on heat. At incandescence bulbs, unfortunately, in heat the most part of energy is spent. At fluorescent lamps the indicator of luminous efficiency is much higher. And LED lamps will have the best.

The first options of LEDs, owing to imperfection of material of which they were made though were considered as the best light sources concerning efficiency, but could not give sufficient power. Even having lit the set of LEDs at the same time, the result was not that. But with development of technologies it was succeeded to achieve improvement of brightness of the luminescence many times that at the moment already allows to make the device with sizes of normal bulbs, and with the flow of light is much brighter and more economic, than at their predecessors.

LED bulbs represent the light-emitting devices consisting of the set of the LED semiconductor elements which are built in inside. These LED lamps have only one shortcoming - rather high cost. It, as well as all new goods while only gains popularity steam (producers promise that by 2015 LED lamps will come out on top on their use in life).

The main conditions of new sources are the small size of lamps, durability and low energy consumption. The LEDs meeting all these requirements are considered as the main applicant for replacement to glow lamps and luminescent. While all sources of lighting existing today reached the maximum light efficiency, LEDs approached only 10% of the opportunities.

The main advantages of LEDs in front of glow lamps is long service life, higher light yield, safety, lack of heating. LEDs emit clean this world while glow lamps radiate also in the infrared spectrum.

Nearly 95% of the electricity consumed by glow lamps go to heat therefore for rooms in which the large number of glow lamps is used it is required to carry out additional works on conditioning and cooling of air. Glow lamps consume 80% more electric power, than LEDs, they require high tension.

Comparing LEDs to fluorescent lamps, it is impossible to speak unambiguously about advantage of the first. For today the light efficiency of white LEDs is twice less, than at fluorescent lamps, and the price – above. Here first of all it is necessary to consider the fact that for the majority of cases where fluorescent lamps are used now, according to technical indications and operating conditions it is more favorable and safer to use LED lighting.

For example, in coal-mining mines so-called "explosion-proof" fluorescent lamps which work from tension in 127 Century are used. If there is tension throw (the ordinary case for faces and mines), the fluorescent lamp dies away immediately. In the same way lamps at any deviation from norms of operation behave, during the jolting or fall of temperature of air.

Besides, the used fluorescent lamps after end of term of operation have to be subjected to obligatory utilization as mercury-containing waste (RSO). For reference use: annually in USA about 80000 fulfilled fluorescent lamps are the share of 1 million population (or 16 tons of RSO). The cost of utilization of 1 t of RSO is 300 US dollars. It is easy to count that annual expenses only on utilization of fluorescent lamps for USA have to make the sum about 700 000 dollars.

In practice service life of fluorescent lamps and especially glow lamps is shorter than the term specified by the manufacturer. This results from the fact that often conditions of their operation do not correspond to standards. If tension in network changes or ambient air temperature or lighting instruments are exposed to unexpected mechanical influences, lamps fuse or fight much more often than it is possible to assume.

LEDs as solid light sources do not contain glass, threads of incandescence or replaceable parts, they cannot be broken, and they are not sensitive to changes of voltage in power supply networks. The average duration of operation of energy saving luminescent bulbs is equal till 15 000 o'clock, and at new LED it makes from 20 000 to 100 000 hours.

    It is necessary to treat LED light sources with some care. For example many LED lamps with the color temperature of 4000 To are also more capable to cause insomnia if to be 2 — 3 hours before going to bed in the room lit by them. The reason — excess of blue color in the lamp range.
